CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG
The Ohio Utilities Protection Services (OUPS) and Gambier are encouraging residents to call 811 before you dig. April is Safe Digging Month. Always call before you dig. Call the Village Office at 427-2671 or visit www.oups.org for more information.
DOWNED ELECTRIC POWER LINES
Gambier would like to remind residents to not go in areas where trees have come down because it is very dangerous, especially in the dark. In resent weeks the Village had several trees come down and take down electric power lines with them. When a tree takes the electric power lines down the lines are live until the power company can come and turn them off. The Village of Gambier will do it's best to mark the areas as soon as possible but, please do not go into the area around the fallen tree. Gambier's Maintenance Crew will remove the trees from the roadways just as soon as AEP gives to OK for a safe work zone.
YARD CLEAN-UP WASTE
Yard waste can not be disposed of with the regular Wednesday Village Refuse Collection. However, you can take the yard waste from lawn clean up to the Knox County Disposal Site (Old Knox County Landfill area). The site is on Thayer Road, South of Mt. Vernon, off Route 3 & 36.
The landfill is accepting brush, grass, tree limbs (up to 10" diameter), and most compostable yard waste items every Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Also, any time there is a severe storm, the landfill is open every day during the week following the storm.
If you have any questions about this waste site, please call the Knox County Commissioners Office at 393-6703.
STICK IT TO THE VILLAGE DAY
Again this year the Village of Gambier is having it's stick it to the Village Days on Monday, April 26th and Monday, May 3rd. This means the Gambier Maintenance Dept. will go around and pick up any pile of sticks the residents have piled out by the road. These pile can only be the sticks and limbs that have fallen from your trees over the winter and are laying on the ground. Please do not trim the trees in your yard and pile them out by the street, if you trim your trees please take the brush down to the Spring Dumpster Day on Saturday, June 12th, 2010. The pile at the road needs to be manageable for the crew to pick up. If you can bind the sticks with a string for easy pick that would be great. This pick up is designed to help with yard clean up and help those who can not bring their brush to Dumpster Day. No yard waste, (such as grass, weeds, leaves, dirt, etc..) will be picked up. This is for sticks only.
COMMUNITY GARDENS IN GAMBIER
The Village of Gambier is considering creation of a community garden area in which residents would be able to rent small plots for the growing season for a nominal sum. The community gardens would be located in a flat, sunlit area of village-owned property. Because of the problems of predation by deer and other animals, the garden area would be surrounded by a tall fence. Water would be available on site. Plots would range in size from 10' x 10' to 20' x 20', with rents of $10 to $20 per season. If you would be interested in renting a plot in such a community garden, please contact Village Administrator Suzanne Hopkins.
LITTLE LEAGUE AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER
As a reminder, spring will be bringing a
new season of Baseball to the Community Center Parks. The Little League Opening Day will take place on Saturday, April 24th at 9:00 am, in Danville. The first games will be played on Monday, April 26th, beginning at 6:00 p.m., at the Village of Gambier ball fields. Please drive slowly and carefully when in the Community Center area as we will have a large number of children playing in the Park, not only during ball season but all summer long.
The Little League President this year is Rob Heagren. Anyone with questions about the Little League Association can reach him at 390-0409. Coaches are reminded that they need to fill out reservation forms for ball field time. Forms can be obtained in the Village office from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. All events that use the Park area must reserve the Park or Ball field spaces through the Village of Gambier office. Mr. Heagren and the Village will compile the playing schedule. Any event scheduled through the Village office will take precedence over events not scheduled by the proper procedure.
NEWS FROM MAYOR KIRK EMMERT
Summer Projects
In coming months the Village crew, Council, and Administration, in addition to attending to regular maintenance work, will be focused on the following projects:
Water main - Several times, in recent years, the plastic water main on the east side of Meadow Ln. has ruptured, draining the water tower and interrupting the Village water supply. In June or July 1600 feet of this water main will be replaced with a stronger, ductile iron pipe. Most of this work will be accomplished by boring the new line rather than having to place it in a dug trench.
Water meters - Pit meters or new interior meters will be installed at the 13 residences in the Village which still have old internal meters. A number of large meters will also be replaced at Kenyon.
Waste water - A further section of our waste water lines will be cleaned and photographed and a collapsed line from the old bank and a damaged manhole will be repaired. A large pump will be replaced at the waste water plant.
Storm water - Drawing on funds accumulated by our storm water utility, we will replace a section of our storm water lines, probably on Brooklyn St. from Gaskin to Acland.
Sidewalks - In recent years the Village has constructed new sidewalks from Kokosing Dr. to the Gambier Homes, along Rt. 308, and from the Community Center to the KAC along Meadow Ln. The Council is working on a comprehensive sidewalk plan for the Village. We will implement a portion of that plan by constructing additional sidewalk this summer.
Parks - The Village hopes to begin implementing our recent Park Plan by initiating reconstruction of the Community Center Park. The initial part of this project entails moving the ball fields and the parking lot. We have applied for a grant to help finance this work.
Home Help and Housing for Retirees in Gambier and College Township
Several community members have met informally to discuss ways to improve the lives of retirees and of the elderly in Gambier and the Township. We have begun to explore the needs of two different groups of retirees: 1) those who want to remain in their homes but increasingly need assistance to accomplish this and 2) those who would like to move from their homes to smaller, more manageable quarters but want to continue to live in Gambier or in the Township. This latter group might, of course, also desire increased assistance.
What kinds of assistance? Perhaps, help with finances, house cleaning, yard maintenance, interior house repairs, meals, minor medical matters, transportation to events or for shopping, etc. This help might be provided in part by volunteers and in part by professionals approved by a committee or director of the association. The details of how all this would be financed and administered, and what services might be provided, require much more discussion.
At their initial discussion, the group concluded that its efforts should focus first on providing services to those who want to remain in their homes. Providing new housing for those who want smaller quarters, was viewed as is an important but longer range project. Very tentatively, it was suggested that such housing might provide both well designed condos and rental apartments, attractively organized in a planned unit development in the Village or the Township.
If you would like to express your support for either or both of these projects, make suggestions, join in further discussions or just seek further information please call or email Peg Heasley (427-4772) (bpheas@ecr.net) or Ruth Woehr (427-4535) (Woehr@kenyon.edu).
